One small step for man, but one giant leap for fashion?
Italian fashion house Prada has partnered with aerospace company Axiom Space to develop NASA’s new spacesuits for its Artemis III lunar mission, the first manned lunar landing since December 1972, when the Apollo 17 mission ended.
– Our team has redefined spacesuit development, established new paths to innovative solutions and applied a state-of-the-art design methodology toAxEMU, says Matt Ondler, president of Axiom Space in a press release.
“We have broken with tradition. The partnership between Axiom Space and Prada has created a new fundamental model for collaboration across industries and expanded the boundaries of what is possible in commercial spaceflight,” he says.

The spacesuits were unveiled during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan on Wednesday, October 16.

Prada writes that thanks to their expertise in raw materials, production techniques and innovative design, engineers from the fashion house have worked closely with the Axiom Space team to develop a suit that will protect astronauts from the extreme conditions of space. The suit will also enable human exploration of the Moon’s south pole for the first time.
According to Axiom Space, the astronauts will be able to go on a spacewalk for at least eight hours.
