Labubu: How this horrifying plush toy became the ultimate charm to hang on your bag

It’s impossible to miss this childish accessory: the Labubu is appearing on fashionistas’ bags, adding a touch of playfulness and originality.

Its little monster head has been invading social media for several weeks. Labubu, a character from the “The Monsters” range created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, has become the new obsession of fashionistas. With its mischievous look and sharp teeth, this plush toy is the accessory of the moment, transformed into key rings or bold charms attached to the most coveted bags. On TikTok, users are multiplying videos showing their finds, proudly displaying this mischievous mascot. The irony? These accessible and playful plush toys are now enthroned on Birkin, Goyard, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs bags . A striking contrast where luxury and the childish world intertwine, giving birth to an association as unexpected as it is seductive. More than just a plush toy, Labubu is now a collector’s item, like the Pokémon cards or Diddl notebooks of our childhood. Sold as a “blind box” – a concept where the buyer discovers their model at random among a thematic series, sometimes in limited edition – it is becoming increasingly rare. In one year, demand has quadrupled, emptying the shelves of Pop Mart, the Chinese toy manufacturer that holds the license, and triggering a treasure hunt on resale sites.

The rise of charms and other lucky charms that personalize our bags has gradually reintroduced nostalgia into our accessories. Fashionistas have thus seized on Labubu, seduced by their comforting and playful dimension. More than a toy, they have become a real fashion statement, a fetish object that never leaves its owner. Especially since these little monsters can be dressed, reinforcing their aesthetic appeal and evoking childhood memories of dressing up their dolls. Prada overalls, Gucci bob, Chanel bag, Dior dress: on TikTok, users compete in creativity to make outfits, transforming their Labubu into a unique accessory. The craze is such that it has even won over Lisa from Blackpink, a big fan of the phenomenon. On Instagram, she regularly shares her casual looks, always accompanied by her Louis Vuitton bag decorated with several Labubu. Last April, she even published a photo of herself hugging an XXL version of the plush toy. Enough to confirm the fashion status of Labubu.
