“Gigantic sizes”: – Unfortunate choice of words

The statement by the marketing manager at Subdued has caused reactions.

When Subdued opened the doors to its new store in Oslo on September 4th, there was a long queue outside.

VG took the trip the day after the opening to check out the store and the clothes that are aimed at young girls.

– We don’t have giant sizes, we don’t. We go up to XL on the pants, said marketing manager for Subdued Scandinavia, Josefine Samuelsson, to VG.

When VG posted the video on TikTok, several people reacted to the statement that they do not have “giant sizes.” One of them is Fæbrik CEO, Karoline Kjønniksen.

– I think attitudes like that contribute to increased body pressure, she says and continues:

– I find that incredibly sad, especially when this store is aimed at younger girls.

She believes this goes beyond the self-esteem of those who want to shop there.

– I think many people go home with a stomachache. That they become insecure and think about what they should do to change.

Josefine Samuelsson tells MinMote that she should have worded it differently:

– I used an unfortunate choice of words. I should have said: “We don’t have size XXL”, because we don’t, she says.

The marketing manager has been presented with the criticism in this case. Read more of the response further down in the case.

The comment section is boiling

The video on VG’s TikTok profile has been viewed over 440,000 times. In the comments section, there are several people who are reacting to the same thing:

“Is it any wonder people struggle with their self-image? I’m just saying…”

“No wonder there is body pressure here in society when some stores don’t sell clothes that fit everyone.”

“Doesn’t have ‘giant sizes’. Another store that gives girls a negative view of their bodies.”

What do you think?
