Barbie 2: film development already underway?

Barbie 2

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are said to have an idea for a sequel, but Warner Bros. denies it.

A little over a year after the Barbie phenomenon and its $1.4 billion revenue, a new film seems to be on the way.

Barbie 2 has reportedly begun development at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter, which says the process is in the “early stages” of development but also notes that Greta Gerwig — who co-wrote and directed the original film — and Noah Baumbach have already “developed an idea for a new film.”The idea has reportedly been pitched to Warner Bros.

THR notes that nothing has been finalized yet, but the duo could begin work on the project after their respective upcoming films. Noah Baumbach is currently finishing a feature film called Jay Kelly for Netflix, which stars George Clooney, Adam Sandler and also Greta Gerwig. At the same time, Gerwig is working on her adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.

“The fact that a story has been found opens the door to negotiations, which, again, are in their early stages,” THR said, citing anonymous sources that the studio was keen to refute. Contacted by the specialist site, Warner Bros. and a representative for the filmmakers denied: “This information has no legitimacy. THR’s information is inaccurate.”

But the site maintains this idea that Barbie 2 is now launched and even suggests that Baumbach will begin writing, before being joined by Greta Gerwig. To be continued.
