Carla Bruni replays history by wearing a John Galliano creation, worn on the catwalks 30 years ago

For the Grand Dîner du Louvre, the former first lady chose an archive piece by John Galliano. And not just any piece: a black and white dress that she herself had worn on the catwalk in 1995.

On Tuesday, March 4, the Louvre hosted its own Met Gala, a grand dinner under the Marly courtyard aimed at raising funds for its collections and celebrating its very first exhibition dedicated to fashion. A prestigious event where the guests had to be up to par. And among them, Carla Bruni shone brightly. The undisputed mistress of French elegance, she almost stole the show at the famous Louvre pyramid, a place where celebrities paraded in front of the flashes. Her secret weapon? An ivory dress adorned with black floral patterns, an archive piece by John Galliano , straight out of the fall-winter 1995-1996 collection.

Carla Bruni resurrects an iconic John Galliano dress

This is not just a style choice: Carla Bruni had already worn this same dress on the Parisian catwalks almost 30 years ago, during the collection’s show in 1995. At the time, she embodied the quintessence of glamour with a diaphanous complexion, scarlet lips and smoky eyes with glittery reflections. Today, she modernizes this exceptional piece with velvet opera gloves and a long black coat draped over her shoulders. A perfect nod to the exhibition “Louvre Couture: Objets d’art, objets de mode”, which celebrates the dialogue between history and fashion. Proof that some pieces are timeless… and that Carla Bruni knows better than anyone how to bring them back to life.
