Netflix’s number 1 series, The Zen Murders ends its first season on a cliffhanger that opens the door to a potential second season. And if the books that inspired this fiction are any indication, the sequel could reveal some surprising twists we thought were long buried…
The unexpected success of the German series The Zen Murders has surprised many. After claiming the top spot among the most-watched shows from Beauty in Black, the latest series from Tyler Perry, this German-language thriller is even holding strong against Season 2 of The Diplomat, which was a major hit with its debut. While the popularity of Karsten Dusse’s book trilogy, on which the show is based, contributes to the buzz, it doesn’t entirely explain the phenomenon. It’s likely that Netflix subscribers are drawn to the unique blend of serial killer suspense and self-improvement themes, embodied by Björn (Tom Schilling) – a lawyer who, through mindfulness meditation, discovers that eliminating the toxic people in his life might just be the ultimate stress relief.
The Zen Murders: Season 2 coming soon to the Netflix series?
Warning, spoilers. At the end of season 1, Björn manages to cover up the murder of Dragan, his client and mafia boss, by making people believe that he is hidden from everything.
He even manages getting his men into his pocket and at his command and has Toni, the only one who has doubts, eliminated, as well as Möller, the policeman on his trail. The only problem is that Boris, the leader of the opposing gang, wants to see Dragan in the flesh. Björn convinces him that he must take shelter in the same place as Dragan to escape the police and makes him get into the trunk of his car, using the same modus operandi as for Dragan’s murder. At the end of the season,
Björn is officially an independent lawyer and he has managed to take over the two mafia gangs that could have had him. But how could this story end? The plot therefore allows us to consider a season 2, which Netflix has not yet confirmed. But this season 1 being adapted from volume 1 of Karsten Dusse’s books, there is still material to complete Björn’s story.
The Zen Murders: This Reversal of Situation Announced by the Books for Season 2
If the series were ever renewed, it’s a safe bet that the storyline would once again be based on the books. Volume 2 begins with surprising news for fans: while Björn had locked Boris in a safe and cut off one of his fingers to get his fingerprints and make people believe he was still alive, in the same way as Dragan, Boris was thought to be killed. But in volume 2, we discover that Boris is not dead but is sequestered in the basement of the daycare… An imprudent move that could cost Björn dearly if the old mobster’s clan discovered the truth.
